SABEL

I stood back in the darkness and listened to Lucy tell Jacob about Abraham before she headed back towards me. I reckon she wanted to give Jacob some time alone. I really wasn’t sure if I should walk over and wrap my arms around him or let him be alone. I knew that his heart was broken and that alone was making me sad.

After a little while longer of watching Jacob sitting there staring at the grave site, I walked over to him. He looked up at me, his face all wet from the tears.

“I should have come with him,” Jacob said.

“If you had, you could be dead with him too. At least he be free now.”

“Yes, he is free now.”

“He gots two young boys, three and four, so part of him will always be here. I pray for them though, cause he free now and them boys still here and may never be free now. Life ain’t going to be easy for them since he won’t be here to protect them.”

“Once we reach Philadelphia and get settled, we will have to come back and get them, so they can be free too, Sabel. I know that’s what he would want and I feel I owe him at least that much.”

I stood up. “I’s don’t know about coming back here and taking a chance of losing my freedom, or getting killed.”

“But what else can we do? We can’t just leave them here.”

“No, we can’t leave dem here, so we will have to take dem with us. It ain’t going to be easy trying to run with two youngins. Do you think the mother gon let us just take them with us like that?”

“Every mother wants their child to be free,” Jacob said.

“We are only a couple days away.”

“What about Abigale; she has to be a part of this. She may not want to help with this and maybe lose her chance at bein free,” Jacob replied as he walked back over, looking down at Abraham’s grave.

“We will talk to her and see what she say about it. I’s going to go inside and give you some time to be here with Abraham. Just come in when you be ready.”

I walked away and looked back at Jacob standing over Abraham’s grave and I headed inside the cabin.

“Is Jacob doing OK?” Mrs. Lucy asked.

“Yes’em.” I answered and sat back down at the table next to Abigale. Fifteen minutes later Jacob came inside and took a seat at the table.

“You okay, child?” Mrs. Lucy asked.

Before Jacob could answer, there was a knock at the door. Before Mrs. Lucy could make it to the door, a white man walked in. The bundle I had was on the other side of the room and the guns we took was still wrapped inside.

“Massa, Massa come on in.” Mrs. Lucy said. “This here is Massa Parks’s son. He been helping us move some of our people.”

Another white man helping us. I guess all white people ain’t that bad after all, I thought to myself.
